Hybrid Cars Review
Hybrid cars are gaining popular and are available in many styles and sizes. They cost less to drive than other cars, contribute less to pollution and mark a trend towards wiser car buys. The prices of hybrid cars range from $20k to $30k for the most popular models. As more people purchase hybrid cars more manufacturers will make new models. Below are some of the most popular hybrids of 2005-2006.
Toyota Prius
Most reviewers agree that the Toyota Prius is the best you can get in hybrid vehicles. This hybrid uses a parallel system with the electric motor providing the main drive and the gas engine delivering assist for acceleration and higher speeds. In most city driving situations the Prius operates only on the power from the electric motor. The EPA mileage estimates for the Toyota Prius are 60 city/51 highway.
Owners appreciate the great fuel economy, relative roominess, and equipment and luxury car features. Things people did not like were the cost, repair costs, and no side molding to prevent parking lot dents. Overall the comments we have read on the Prius are favorable and make this the one to own.
Honda Civic Hybrid
The Honda Civic Hybrid is available for around $23k and looks much the same as the other Honda Civic models. The estimates say you can expect 49/50 MPG for significant gain in fuel economy over the other Civics. Most agree that the passenger compartment is roomy and comfortable for a car the size of the civic.
This hybrid is reported by consumers to not deliver on the expected MGP estimates of 49/50. Most drivers report a mixed driving MPG of about 35 to 40. Some of the other complaints found include poor sound equipment, no rear disc brakes and driver side legroom. This is a hybrid that could use a larger battery and rely more on the electric motor.
Ford Escape Hybrid
The Ford Escape Hybrid is a very popular hybrid from your Ford dealer in the $27k price range. This is a very attractive SUV with 2WD or 4WD models available. The real world 28 MGP make this one of the most economical SUVs to drive. The Escape Hybrid has stiff competition from Toyota and Lexus but is still considered the best for price and fuel economy.
While this hybrid is praised for its maneuverability, visibility, cargo room and wide array of conveniences it has some downsides as well. Some of the customer comments we have found indicate sluggish climbing ability, A/C cuts out at stops, not great for off-roading and poor acceleration.
